daily reading 52.3 (Isaiah 9:2–7)

5-days-a-week through Romans and the letters Paul wrote from Rome in 2024

Our opening prayer for today:

    Of the Father's love begotten
ere the worlds began to be,
    he is Alpha and Omega,
he the source, the ending he,
of the things that are, that have been,
and that future years shall see
    evermore and evermore.

    Oh, that birth forever blessed
when the virgin, full of grace,
    by the Holy Ghost conceiving,
bore the Savior of our race,
and the babe, the world's Redeemer,
    first revealed his sacred face
    evermore and evermore.

This is he whom seers and sages
sang of old with one accord,
whom the voices of the prophets
    promised in their faithful word.
    Now he shines, the long-expected;
    let creation praise its Lord
    evermore and evermore.

Let the heights of heav'n adore him,
    angel hosts his praises sing,
    pow'rs, dominions bow before him
and extol our God and King.
Let no tongue on earth be silent,
    ev'ry voice in concert ring
    evermore and evermore.

Christ, to thee, with God the Father,
and, O Holy Ghost, to thee
hymn and chant and high thanksgiving
    and unending praises be,
    honor, glory, and dominion
    and eternal victory
    evermore and evermore. Amen.

Isaiah 9:2–7

  • The people walking in darkness have seen a great light; a light has dawned on those living in the land of darkness.
  • You have enlarged the nation and increased its joy. The people have rejoiced before you as they rejoice at harvest time and as they rejoice when dividing spoils.
  • 4 For you have shattered their oppressive yoke and the rod on their shoulders, the staff of their oppressor, just as you did on the day of Midian.
  • 5 For every trampling boot of battle and the bloodied garments of war will be burned as fuel for the fire.
  • 6 For a child will be born for us, a son will be given to us, and the government will be on his shoulders. He will be named Wonderful Counselor, Mighty God, Eternal Father, Prince of Peace.
  • 7 The dominion will be vast, and its prosperity will never end. He will reign on the throne of David and over his kingdom, to establish and sustain it with justice and righteousness from now on and forever. The zeal of the LORD of Armies will accomplish this.
helpful notes on Isaiah 9:2–7

For yourself pray

  • That you are zealous for what God himself is zealous for

For others pray

  • That God brings eternal peace to all who are waiting for Jesus to reappear

A song to listen to and ponder, as time allows
