daily reading 51.1 (Philippians 3:17–4:1)
5-days-a-week through Romans and the letters Paul wrote from Rome in 2024
Our opening prayer for this week:
Rejoice, rejoice, believers,
and let your lights appear;
the evening is advancing,
and darker night is near.
The Bridegroom is arising
and soon is drawing nigh.
Up, pray and watch and wrestle;
at midnight comes the cry.
The watchers on the mountain
proclaim the Bridegroom near;
go forth, as he approaches,
with alleluias clear.
The marriage feast is waiting;
the gates wide open stand,
Arise, O heirs of glory;
the Bridegroom is at hand.
You saints, who here in patience
your cross and suff'rings bore,
shall live and reign forever
when sorrow is no more.
Around the throne of glory
the Lamb you shall behold,
in triumph lay before him
your shining crowns of gold.
Our hope and expectation,
O Jesus, now appear;
arise, O Sun so longed for,
above this shadowed sphere.
With hearts and hands uplifted
we plead, O Lord, to see
the day of earth's redemption
that sets your people free. Amen.
Philippians 3:17–4:1
- Join in imitating me, brothers and sisters, and pay careful attention to those who live according to the example you have in us.
- 18 For I have often told you, and now say again with tears, that many live as enemies of the cross of Christ.
- 19 Their end is destruction; their god is their stomach; their glory is in their shame. They are focused on earthly things, 20 but our citizenship is in heaven, and we eagerly wait for a Savior from there, the Lord Jesus Christ.
- 21 He will transform the body of our humble condition into the likeness of his glorious body, by the power that enables him to subject everything to himself.
- 1 So then, my dearly loved and longed for brothers and sisters, my joy and crown, in this manner stand firm in the Lord, dear friends.
