daily reading 43.1 (Colossians 3:5–11)

5-days-a-week through Romans and the letters Paul wrote from Rome in 2024

Our opening prayer for this week:

    God, my Refuge and my Rest,
    God, my Fortress, firm and sure,
    God, my Savior and my Hope
    In your strength I stand secure.

    When my foes devise their schemes,
    When they mouth their cunning lies,
    You discern their true intent—
    Who can take you by surprise?

    Frail indeed is human strength,
    Yielding scant security;
    Brief indeed are earthly lives,
    Measured by eternity.

    Though my riches multiply,
    I will trust in you, my Lord:
    May my heart be yours alone,
    And your favor my reward.

    Be my Refuge and my Rest,
    Be my Fortress, firm and sure;
    Be my Savior and my Hope,
    God in whom I stand secure. Amen.

Colossians 3:5–11

  • Therefore, put to death what belongs to your earthly nature: sexual immorality, impurity, lust, evil desire, and greed, which is idolatry.
  • 6 Because of these, God's wrath is coming upon the disobedient, 7 and you once walked in these things when you were living in them.
  • 8 But now, put away all the following: anger, wrath, malice, slander, and filthy language from your mouth.
  • 9 Do not lie to one another, since you have put off the old self with its practices 10 and have put on the new self. You are being renewed in knowledge according to the image of your Creator.
  • 11 In Christ there is not Greek and Jew, circumcision and uncircumcision, barbarian, Scythian, slave and free; but Christ is all and in all.
helpful notes on Colossians 3:5–11

For yourself pray

  • That God gives you the will in Christ to put to death whatever belongs to your sinful nature

For others pray

  • That God uses the problems that come from greed to stem the power of greed in your community

A song to listen to and ponder, as time allows

  • Psalm 133 (YouTube, duet, "How good and pleasing when brothers live in unity")
