daily reading 19.4 (Romans 11:7–10)

5-days-a-week through Romans and the letters Paul wrote from Rome in 2024

Our opening prayer for today:

        God of grace and God of glory,
On your people pour your power;
Crown your ancient Church’s story;
Bring its bud to glorious flower.
Grant us wisdom; grant us courage
For the facing of this hour,
    For the facing of this hour.

Lo, the hosts of evil round us
Scorn the Christ, assail his ways.
From our fears that long have bound us,
Free our hearts to faith and praise.
Grant us wisdom; grant us courage
        For the living of these days,
    For the living of these days.

Cure your children’s warring madness;
Bend our pride to your control;
Shame our wanton, selfish gladness,
Rich in things and poor in soul.
Grant us wisdom, grant us courage
Lest we miss your kingdom’s goal,
    Lest we miss your kingdom’s goal.

Save us from weak resignation
To the evils we deplore;
Let the gift of your salvation
Be our glory evermore.
Grant us wisdom, grant us courage,
Serving you whom we adore,
    Serving you whom we adore. Amen.

Romans 11:7–10

  • What then? Israel did not find what it was looking for, but the elect did find it. The rest were hardened, 8 as it is written, God gave them a spirit of stupor, eyes that cannot see and ears that cannot hear, to this day.
  • 9 And David says, Let their table become a snare and a trap, a pitfall and a retribution to them.  10 Let their eyes be darkened so that they cannot see, and their backs be bent continually.
Romans 11:7–10

Elijah emerges from the cave

For yourself pray:

  • That you never harden your heart to God

For others pray:

  • That for Jesus' sake God is patient with his Jewish chosen children

A psalm to listen to and ponder, as time allows:

  • Psalm 71 (YouTube, soloist with guitar, "My praise is perpetual")
