daily reading 19.3 (Romans 11:1–6)
5-days-a-week through Romans and the letters Paul wrote from Rome in 2024
Our opening prayer for today:
God of grace and God of glory,
On your people pour your power;
Crown your ancient Church’s story;
Bring its bud to glorious flower.
Grant us wisdom; grant us courage
For the facing of this hour,
For the facing of this hour.
Lo, the hosts of evil round us
Scorn the Christ, assail his ways.
From our fears that long have bound us,
Free our hearts to faith and praise.
Grant us wisdom; grant us courage
For the living of these days,
For the living of these days.
Cure your children’s warring madness;
Bend our pride to your control;
Shame our wanton, selfish gladness,
Rich in things and poor in soul.
Grant us wisdom, grant us courage
Lest we miss your kingdom’s goal,
Lest we miss your kingdom’s goal.
Save us from weak resignation
To the evils we deplore;
Let the gift of your salvation
Be our glory evermore.
Grant us wisdom, grant us courage,
Serving you whom we adore,
Serving you whom we adore. Amen.
Romans 11:1–6
- I ask, then, has God rejected his people? Absolutely not! For I too am an Israelite, a descendant of Abraham, from the tribe of Benjamin.
- 2 God has not rejected his people whom he foreknew. Or don't you know what the Scripture says in the passage about Elijah-- how he pleads with God against Israel?
- 3 Lord, they have killed your prophets and torn down your altars. I am the only one left, and they are trying to take my life!
- 4 But what was God's answer to him? I have left seven thousand for myself who have not bowed down to Baal.
- 5 In the same way, then, there is also at the present time a remnant chosen by grace.
- 6 Now if by grace, then it is not by works; otherwise grace ceases to be grace.
Romans 11:1–6
For yourself pray:
- That God rescues you from godless pessimism
For others pray:
- That God is merciful to children caught in the Israel-Hamas war
A psalm to listen to and ponder, as time allows:
- Psalm 71 (YouTube, duet, "Hasten to me")
