daily reading 18.1 (Romans 9:30–33)

5-days-a-week through Romans and the letters Paul wrote from Rome in 2024

Our opening prayer for today:

“I am the Vine; my Father is the Gardener.
    Each branch that bears no fruit, he cuts away;
While every branch that yields good fruit, he trims and cleans,
So that it will produce more every day.
Now you are clean because of all to you I spoke.
Remain in me; I will remain in you.
Just as a branch without the vine will yield no grapes,
So keep abiding in me, that you bear fruit too.

“I am the Vine; if you, like branches, stay in me
And I in you, you will yield much, in turn.
Apart from me, you will accomplish not a thing,
But be a branch that withers and is burned.
If you remain in me, and my words stay within,
Ask what you wish; it will be given you."
God now be glorified in me. Let me bring forth much fruit,
Proving I am my Lord's disciple, through and through.”. Amen.

Romans 9:30–33

  • What should we say then? Gentiles, who did not pursue righteousness, have obtained righteousness—namely the righteousness that comes from faith.
  •  31 But Israel, pursuing the law of righteousness, has not achieved the righteousness of the law.
  •  32 Why is that? Because they did not pursue it by faith, but as if it were by works. They stumbled over the stumbling stone.
  •  33 As it is written, Look, I am putting a stone in Zion to stumble over and a rock to trip over, and the one who believes on him will not be put to shame.
Helpful notes on Romans 9:30–33

For yourself pray:

  • That God leads you to bear fruit for him today

For others pray:

  • That God keeps your whole congregation from sitting in judgment of him and his word

A psalm to listen to and ponder, as time allows:

  • Psalm 68 (YouTube, choir, "The Lord gave the word")
