daily reading 47.4 (Philippians 1:15–18)

5-days-a-week through Romans and the letters Paul wrote from Rome in 2024

Our opening prayer for this week:

    For all the saints, who from their labors rest,
    All who their faith before the world confessed,
    Your name, O Jesus, be forever blessed.
    Alleluia, Alleluia!

    You were their Rock, their Fortress and their Might;
    You, Lord, their Captain in the well fought fight;
    You, in the darkness drear, their one true Light.
    Alleluia, Alleluia!

    O blest communion, fellowship divine!
    We feebly struggle, they in glory shine;
    Yet all are one within your grand design.
    Alleluia, Alleluia!

    O may your soldiers, faithful, true and bold,
    Fight as the saints who nobly fought of old,
    And win with them the victor’s crown of gold.
    Alleluia, Alleluia!

    And when the strife is fierce, the warfare long,
    Steals on the ear the distant triumph song,
    And hearts are brave, again, and arms are strong.
    Alleluia, Alleluia!. Amen.

Philippians 1:15–18

  • To be sure, some preach Christ out of envy and rivalry, but others out of good will.
  • 16 These preach out of love, knowing that I am appointed for the defense of the gospel;
  • 17  the others proclaim Christ out of selfish ambition, not sincerely, thinking that they will cause me trouble in my imprisonment.
  • 18 What does it matter? Only that in every way, whether from false motives or true, Christ is proclaimed, and in this I rejoice.
helpful notes on Philippians 1:15–18

For yourself pray

  • That God protects you from others' petty jealousies

For others pray

  • That Christ is preached more widely and more boldly in your community

A song to listen to and ponder, as time allows

  • Psalm 142 (YouTube, "I call out with my voice")
