daily reading 24.1 (Romans 13:11–14)

5-days-a-week through Romans and the letters Paul wrote from Rome in 2024

Our opening prayer for this week:

    In Adam we have all been one, One huge rebellious man;
We all have fled that evening voice That sought us as we ran.

We fled our God, and losing him, We lost our brother, too.
Each singly sought and claimed his own; Each man his brother slew.

But your strong love, it sought us still, And sent your only Son
That we might hear his shepherd-voice And, hearing him, be one.

O Savior, when we loved you not, You loved and saved us all.
O great good Shepherd of mankind, Oh, hear us when we call.

Send us your Spirit; teach us truth To purge our vanity.
From fancied wisdom, self-sought ways, O Savior, set us free. Amen.

Romans 13:11–14

  • Besides this, since you know the time, it is already the hour for you to wake up from sleep, because now our salvation is nearer than when we first believed.
  • 12 The night is nearly over, and the day is near; so let us discard the deeds of darkness and put on the armor of light.
  • 13 Let us walk with decency, as in the daytime: not in carousing and drunkenness; not in sexual impurity and promiscuity; not in quarreling and jealousy.
  • 14 But put on the Lord Jesus Christ, and don't make plans to gratify the desires of the flesh.
helpful notes on Romans 13:11–14

For yourself pray:

  • That God clothes your heart with Jesus so that you walk God's way today

For others pray:

  • That God gives your whole congregation a growing sense of how near the last day is

A psalm to listen to and ponder, as time allows:

  • Psalm 86 (YouTube, duet, "You are faithful again and again.")
